Chapter 6

Disclaimer: Actually, stuff the Disclaimer this time. I’m sure you’ve got the message by now. Don’t be a N00b. Might put some personal thoughts were the disclaimer should be soon. :D

The real challenge of the ride came today. It was to the first ‘checkpoint’, and

Ok, so NaNoWriMo isn’t working out for me quite so well. So let’s change the target. 20,000. Seems fair enough, since everyone else doing it is nearly DOUBLE my age. What, so 20,000 isn’t half of 50,000? fine. 24,999. How’s that?!

The next morning, spirits were high as they entered the restaurant. They were determined to do something constructive today, and decided upon a mountain bike expedition. This proved a slight problem for Alex, as he hadn’t ridden a bike in a decade. But he decided to give it a go anyway. The route took you across all terrain, from suburban streets to distant peeks, and riverside walks to crowded to city centers. The trip cost $400 each, which was about £116. They were going with several other ‘groups’, which all in all equated for around 40 people. Everyone was given an identical bike, a map between five and a compass.

“Screw this”, whispered Charlie, and he removed the iPhone from his pocket and opened the Google Maps application.

“And no PDA or Internet technology”, said the man who was leading the expedition. He was tall, skinny and had long, thin, greasy hair. He was a typical Fairy Tale wizard in that sense, but his voice was musky, and out of place in a body like that. And he had unbelievable strength. Most men his age would find it a small miracle to get onto a bike, let alone ride on across the southern ‘point’ of Australia. “Now then, if anyone gets lost, these watches have a kind of distress signal. Just press the MODE button three times and stay where you are. One of our remote helicopters will come and find you. Please remember to stay in your designated groups, and I hope to see you all in the hotel at the end!”

“Well, he was cheery”, Tod said, trying to break the silence amongst the small crowd of people. Everyone stared at him. “What?!” He shouted.

“Nothing..” Everyone replied, each with a different level of Sarcasm in their voice, ranging from nearly none to the how flaboodle*

They set out along the mountainous road which overlooked the coastline, the sea air brushing past their face as if trying to finally welcome them to Australia. The boys were the longest to keep riding, until they took refuge in a bus shelter when a flash storm hit the streets. According to the locals, this happened a lot round here, so they’d better get used to it. When the rain didn’t stop they decided to call it a night. One of the shopkeepers kindly let them use his food storage room, but only if they washed first.

Next day, they set out, but, after just three minutes, went back to the shop to retrieve the map. Alex had forgotten it, and, as punishment, the boys made him go into a store and buy a really girly magazine. I’m sure he bought WaGz Monthly, but aren’t entirely sure. The rest of the day was plain sailing, with the odd bip on the radar of awesomeness, but nothing too major. They managed to catch up with another cycling team, and found out they’d been third. Until now. They pulled a sneaky move and overtook them on the straight, and then came into the pits for a fuel up and tyre change. Only kidding. They’d overtaken though, and were now in hot pursuit of the leaders. I say hot, but they actually didn’t give two monkeys and sat down under a canopy to eat dinner.

“Yum, this tastes very nice” Alan remarked sarcasticly.

“Quit moanin’, it’s all we had” replied Alex. Turns out a good meal was all the needed to get to sleep and within minutes they’d dozed off. ZZZZZzzzzzzz………….

*Apologies for the made up word, but I couldn’t think of anything!

Night fell over Melbourne, and it dawned on the boys they couldn’t camp out in this place forever. They decided to try and find a hotel, and, armed with an iPhone from the Apple store each, they left. Turns out hotels are hard to find there. But they found one all the same. It was called the White Hart, and seemed nice enough. They were lucky in getting a three bedroom room and a two, so the rest of the day was dedicated to who was sleeping where. And food. Lots and lots of food.

Alex and Tod decided to get an early night, so they dumped their bags in the room that connected the two rooms, left the side-doors open so they could talk, and did various things. Alex mainly updating his facebook account, and Tod just doing nothing. Charlie followed suit, and Alan and Johnny were soon there too. Their trip here would last a few weeks, so they uploaded their first video log to youtube.

“Guys, we’ve already got 1,000 views” Alex said

“Awesome, obviously cos it was my video though” Alan chuckled

Charlie was about to say something, but everyone else had fallen asleep, so he did too

Two weeks later,  the 5 boys, or, ‘FiveAwesomeGuys’ as they wished to be called, were in the city of Melbourne. Quite how they got there was a mystery, but they were there none the less. Their dog, Mick, had just done what a dog does best over Alan’s shoe. They got changed, and set out on their quest, going from house to house, asking fro directions, all the while keeping a Video Log on their own camcorders.

They entered the City Centre, and, amongst the buzz, Charlie saw something. Something with the logo of a fruit. And an iPhone in the window. The. Apple. Store.

“Charlie, you can’t spend all your melbourne time in there.” Alex said

“Watch me”. And so, for 2 days, they were there, 8am til 8pm in the shop. Then something unusaul happened…..

The boys sat down at the table. It was made of mahogany, and had one slightly shorter leg on the right side, but, apart from that, was very nice. The pizza was obviously one of those buy-from-somerfield-and-stick-it-in-the-microwave-because-you-forgot-to-find-the-ingredtients ones, but Alex thought it tasted delicious. Charlie still hadn’t put his iPhone down, and Alan tried to sneak a peek at what he was doing

“Hey! No Peeking!”, Charlie said

“What are you doing?” Alan asked him. He replied by linking his iPhone up to the 65″ TV, thus revealing a map.

“What’s that for, I hear you all ask?” Charlie said in an adventurous way. “We’re going on a trip boys. We’re going to Oz”

“What!?” Alex Cried. “You know I’ve just got back from America. I’m Sick of planes.”

“Who said anything about planes? We’re going on a cruise” Charlie replied.

“None of us have enough money though………” Said Tod, who had been almost silent up to now.

They ate the rest of the meal in total silence. Then returned to the lounge, to be greeted by a large Alsatian.

It was a dark misty night, and Alan was leaving his house for a party. He did not know what the party was about, but his friends Johhny and Alex had invited him, so he went along.

He arrived at 8:30pm, 10 minutes late. he gave his apologies to the doorman, took off his coat, and hung it on the dusty, old coat rack. He choked as a small abundance of dust flew across the room, and made his way to the main room. This was going to be a boring party, as he could see but four people in the room. A man with a beard, apparently called Tod, Johhny, Alex, and a man who had a nearly bold head but was obviously un-comfortable with it, called Charlie. They were playing scrabble, and Tod had just made the word ‘Awesome’.

“Yes! That really is awesome”, he said with and ear to ear grin across his face.

Charlie wasn’t listening, and was doing something on his iPhone, probably a game. So far, however, none of them had noticed him. he knocked on the door, and Tod came over to greet him.

“Hey there, you must be Alan”, he said. he was obviously the oldest, with an un-shaven beard.

“Yeah, that’s me.” He said. He was feeling out of place. All the others were like magnets, but he was the piece of plastic in the way

“D’you wanna come and play?” asked Johnny. Phew. Johnny still regarded him as a friend, but Alex was ignoring him. His iPod was playing a song he’d never heard of, but he was enjoying it.

“Dinner’s Ready!” Shouted Charlie.

“How did you know that?” Asked Alex, obviously keen to find out

“Had the video chat app on my iPhone open” He said. And thus, the five of them collected their pepperoni pizzas and sat down to eat…..
